The premise

Most desk leather is sold as an accessory — a nice object, photographed at an angle, with no dimension attached to it. That is how people end up with a mat six centimetres too wide for the desk it was bought for. We start from the opposite end: the desk is a measurement, the mat is a measurement, and the two either clear each other or they do not.

Everything here is flat or hollow. Nothing has a handle, a strap or a shoulder loop, because nothing here is meant to leave the room. Forty-four pieces, six lines, one hide language: vegetable-tanned full-grain unless the page says otherwise, and the page always says otherwise when it is otherwise.

Desk Layout Builder

Give it a width and a depth and it draws the desk to scale, picks the largest mat that still clears the edges, and places the tray, the cup and the coaster on your writing hand's side. Every placed piece is clickable.

The rule it will not break: a mat may never come closer than six centimetres to the width of the desk or four to its depth. If nothing in the range fits, it says so and sends you to a bespoke cut instead of selling you the next size up.

Your measurements are calculated in the browser and are never sent to us. The plan can be exported as a PNG from your own machine.

will not do

A material page that only lists virtues is a sales page. These four limits apply to everything on this site and are repeated on each product page they touch.

Full material notes

It does not go under food

Coasters, placemats and the runner are underlays for tableware. Put the plate, the glass or the board on top; food itself should not sit on the leather. We make no food-grade claim, because these are not food contact materials.

It does not like heat or standing water

Leather is water-repellent for as long as it takes you to wipe a splash away, and no longer. Keep hot pans, hot mugs straight off the hob and standing puddles off it. Nothing here is a trivet or a heat shield.

Dark hides can transfer colour

On a damp or warm day a deep-dyed hide can mark a pale desk or a light stone worktop. Test a small hidden area first and let a new piece air for a few days before it sits on something precious.

Hand-cut means a tolerance

Every outer dimension carries ±3 mm. Colour and grain shift between hides, and the burnished edge is darker than the face. That is the material behaving as a material.
