The workshop · Tübingen
One material, two shapes
Who this is
XXVSchreibfeld is the desk and room line of Jahn-Lederwaren GmbH, a leather workshop in Tübingen. The name is two German words — schreiben, to write, and Feld, a field or a plane — because the first thing we made was the flat piece a desk is built on, and everything since has been either a plane or a container.
That is the whole boundary of what we do. No bags, no wallets, no straps, nothing that leaves the room. It sounds like a limitation and it works as a discipline: when the only variables are size, thickness and the hide itself, those are the things that have to be right, and they are the things we put at the top of every product page rather than at the bottom.
The catalogue runs to 44 pieces across 6 lines and three sets. Most of it is vegetable-tanned full-grain cowhide, a by-product of the food industry, cut by hand and burnished on every exposed edge. Where a piece uses top-grain, split leather or reconstituted leather fibre instead, its page says so in those words. We think a catalogue that names its materials precisely is worth more than one that calls everything leather.
We also publish what leather will not do. It is not waterproof, it is not heat-resistant, it is not a food surface, and a dark hide can mark a pale desk. Those four sentences cost us a few sales and save a great many returns, which is a trade we are happy with.

How we decide things
Three rules
- 01
The measurement comes first. A piece that does not fit the desk is not a nice object, it is a return. Hence the builder, and hence the clearance rule it will not break.
- 02
Name the material exactly. Full-grain, top-grain, split and bonded fibre are four different things at four different prices. Blurring them is the oldest trick in this trade.
- 03
Publish the limits. Heat, moisture, colour transfer, tolerance — all of it on the material notes page and repeated on every product it touches.
