This is Lederfaserstoff, not hide. ≥ 70 % recycled leather fibre, ≤ 30 % latex and natural binders. Bonded sheet material — this is Lederfaserstoff, not hide, and it is never sold here as 'leather' without that qualifier.

Made from tannery offcuts ground to fibre and bonded into a sheet. It is more uniform than hide and takes a deeper, more even colour, but it does not develop a patina and it does not have a grain layer. We list it beside the full-grain mats because it is honest value at this size, not because it is the same thing.

Limits and behaviour

  • Heat and moisture. Water-repellent only for as long as it takes to wipe a splash away. Keep hot items and standing water off it; this is not a trivet and makes no insulating claim.
  • Colour transfer. A dark hide can mark a pale surface when warm or damp. Test a small hidden area first.
  • Natural variation. Grain, tone and healed marks differ between hides and the burnished edge is darker than the face. This is the material, not a fault.
  • Sensitive skin. Tanning agents can cause contact allergy in individual cases. We make no claim that this piece is allergen-free.

Care

Dust dry. Wipe spills off at once — bonded fibre absorbs faster than hide. Do not saturate, do not machine-clean, and keep it away from heat. Balm is not required and will not build a patina on this material.
